Science

The Science Department offers courses in each of the sciences aligned with the New York State Common Core Curriculum and incorporates the standards of reading and writing throughout. A full range of Advanced Placement (AP) science courses are offered for more advanced study as well as electives for students who wish to pursue conceptual courses as juniors or seniors.

According to the New York State Regents Lab Policy, any student participating in a New York State Regents course must complete a minimum of 1200 minutes of actual hands-on laboratory experiences and complete satisfactory lab reports to be eligible to sit for the Regents exam. Failure to complete the lab requirements for each quarter will result in the student not being eligible to take the Regents exam in June. When the labs are completed, the student becomes eligible. All lab reports must be completed by June 1. Quarterly exams are given during the final week of the first and third quarters. Midterms are administered in January, and final exams and Regents exams are administered in June.

All science courses are inquiry-based and provide students with laboratory experiences as well as real world applications of content. After-school activities extend learning outside the classroom and include opportunities to participate in the Science Olympiad, Mercy Medical Explorers, and FIRST Robotics. Additional competitive activities are encouraged when available.
